Which is the most cost-effective way to transport bulk cargo internationally – sea or air?

Whether sea or air freight is more cost-effective for international bulk cargo depends on a comprehensive consideration of factors such as cargo weight, volume, transit time, and cargo value.

In this article, Weefreight will provide a detailed analysis, which we hope will be helpful.

Freight Costs: Generally speaking, sea freight is relatively low. For example, from Shenzhen, China to Los Angeles, the cost of shipping a standard 40-foot container ranges from approximately US$2,000 to US$5,000. For a cargo weighing approximately 20 tons and with a volume of approximately 30 cubic meters, the per-ton freight rate is approximately US$100 to US$250. Air freight, on the other hand, costs between US$10 and US$30 per kilogram. Assuming a cargo weighing 1 ton and a volume of 5 cubic meters, which is 835 kilograms based on volumetric weight, the air freight cost would be approximately US$8,350 to US$25,050, significantly higher than sea freight. Cargo Weight and Volume: If your cargo is both heavy and large, sea freight may be more cost-effective. Because sea freight is typically charged per container, the cost per kilogram or cubic meter is lower for large shipments. However, if your cargo is light but large, known as light-weight cargo, you should consider air freight’s dimensional weight method. The formula for calculating air freight’s dimensional weight is length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) ÷ 6000. When the dimensional weight exceeds the actual weight, the freight cost may be higher, making sea freight more advantageous in this case.

Shipping Time: Sea freight takes longer, typically 25-35 days, or even longer. Air freight, on the other hand, is faster, typically arriving in 3-7 days. If timeliness is not a priority, sea freight can save costs. However, if your cargo needs to be delivered urgently, such as urgently needed spare parts or high-value electronic products, air freight, while more expensive, can meet your timeliness requirements.

Cargo Value: For high-value cargo, while air freight is more expensive, it offers faster transport, greater security, and reduced risks during transportation, making it a more suitable option. For lower-value bulk cargo, such as raw materials and common daily necessities, sea freight offers a more cost-effective alternative.

In summary, if the cargo is heavy and bulky, timeliness is not a priority, and the value is low, sea freight is more cost-effective. If the cargo is light and small, timeliness is a priority, or the value is high, air freight may be a better option. Of course, when making your decision, you can consult a professional international logistics service provider to develop the optimal shipping plan for your specific situation.
