What qualifications are required for international ocean shipping of lithium batteries?

International ocean shipping of lithium batteries requires the following qualifications and documents:

UN38.3 Test Report: Lithium batteries must pass the tests specified in Section 38.3 of Part 3 of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria for the Transport of Dangerous Goods. These tests include eight tests, including altitude simulation, high and low temperature cycling, vibration, and shock, to ensure that the batteries will not catch fire or explode during transportation. This report is crucial for the safe transportation of lithium batteries.

MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This document covers 16 items of information about lithium batteries, including chemical composition, physical and chemical parameters, flammability and explosion properties, toxicity, environmental hazards, as well as safe use, storage, leak emergency response, and transportation regulations. It is a mandatory document for logistics and customs.

Dangerous Goods Transport Letter of Instruction: This document specifies the shipper, consignee, carrier, and emergency contact information for use in declaring dangerous goods to the shipping company.

Ocean Freight Certificate: Although ocean freight doesn’t require the “Air Transport Conditions Identification Report” like air freight, it’s usually still necessary for a professional organization to issue an Ocean Freight Certificate based on UN38.3 test results to certify that the product complies with international shipping regulations and ensures safe shipping.

Performance Test Certificate: Issued by the inspection and quarantine department, this certificate certifies that the packaging container meets relevant safety standards and is generally valid for one year.

Container Suitability Certificate: A document issued by the shipping company certifying that the container is suitable for transporting dangerous goods, ensuring that the container has the appropriate safety features, such as ventilation, temperature control, and leak prevention.

In addition, depending on the regulatory requirements of different countries and regions, other relevant documents may be required, such as the EU REACH Declaration of Compliance and WEEE registration documents.
