What customs declaration documents are required for international air shipment of lithium batteries?

Lithium battery air shipment customs declarations require basic trade documents such as a commercial invoice and customs declaration form, as well as battery-specific documents such as a UN38.3 test report and MSDS.

In this article, Weefreight will provide detailed instructions and hope it will be helpful.

Commercial Invoice: This document must include the name, model, quantity, unit price, total price, currency, and trade terms. The battery type must be clearly marked, such as UN3480 for lithium-ion batteries or UN3090 for lithium metal batteries, and the net weight, gross weight, volume, and packaging method must be clearly stated for each box.

Contract/Purchase Order: This document is a trade contract or purchase order signed between the buyer and seller.

Customs Declaration Form: This document must be filled in according to Chinese Customs requirements. Items to be declared include the product name, material, intended use, brand, model, voltage, and capacity.

UN38.3 Test Report: Mandatory for all lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries shipped by air. This report demonstrates compliance with eight safety tests, including altitude simulation, vibration, shock, and short-circuiting. It is typically valid for one year.

MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This material safety data sheet must comply with international standards, such as ISO 11014, and describe the battery’s chemical composition, hazards, and transportation requirements.

Dangerous Goods Transport Identification Report: Issued by an organization approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, it confirms that the battery complies with IATA/IMDG transportation regulations.

DGM Declaration: This declaration states that the shipment complies with international transportation regulations. Some express delivery companies require this.

Export License (if required): Due to China’s export control policies, some batteries may require an export license, such as for special uses or sensitive countries.

In addition, different destination countries may have specific certification requirements, such as CE and REACH certification for the EU market. Before customs declaration, carefully verify the accuracy and completeness of all documents to ensure compliance with relevant regulations to ensure smooth customs clearance for lithium batteries shipped by air.
