International shipping to India generally requires the following customs clearance documents:
Commercial Invoice: The shipper must provide a detailed and accurate commercial invoice, clearly indicating the product name, model, specifications, material, quantity, unit price, total price, country of origin, and manufacturer’s name and address. This information must be identical to the actual goods. It is usually completed in English, and multiple copies are usually required.
Packing List: This document details the contents of each package, including the quantity, weight, volume, and packaging dimensions and materials. It should also clearly indicate the shipping mark of each package to facilitate quick identification during transportation and inspection. This information must correspond to the commercial invoice.
Bill of Lading: The ocean bill of lading records the details of the shipment from the place of shipment to the destination, including the shipper, consignee, port of departure, port of destination, and a description of the goods. The importer or customs broker uses this document to handle subsequent pickup and customs clearance procedures.
Certificate of Origin: If goods meet the preferential conditions of relevant Indian trade agreements, a certificate of origin is key to qualifying for preferential tariffs. It must be issued by an officially recognized institution, and the information on the certificate must be consistent with the actual goods and other customs clearance documents.
Import License: Certain goods may require an import license from the Indian importer, such as a Drug Import License for pharmaceutical imports.
Cargo Insurance Policy: This proves that the goods are insured during transportation and is required if required by the terms of trade.
Product-Specific Certificates: Depending on the type of goods, corresponding certifications or certificates of conformity may be required. For example, electronic products require BIS certification, and starting in 2024, lithium-ion batteries will require mandatory certification to the IEC62133 standard. Chemicals require an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) and UN number. Medical devices require CDSCO registration based on their risk level.
Health Certificate or Inspection Certificate: Food, pharmaceuticals, and other products require a health certificate. Some goods may require inspection and require the corresponding inspection certificate.
