What are the uses of palletizing and wrapping in international shipping?

In international shipping, palletizing and wrapping, though seemingly simple, are crucial for ensuring cargo safety and improving transportation efficiency. Whether it’s LCL or FCL, small parcels or large items, proper palletizing and wrapping effectively reduce cargo damage, simplify operations, and avoid extra costs, making them highly cost-effective protective measures in ocean shipping.

Palletizing involves neatly placing goods on pallets to form a stable unit. Pallets are mostly made of wood, plastic, or plywood. Their primary function is to protect the bottom of the goods, preventing direct contact with the ground or container floor, and protecting them from moisture, dirt, and wear. Many goods have soft outer packaging, and direct stacking can easily deform or break them. Palletizing distributes the force evenly, effectively preventing compression deformation and corner damage.

At the same time, palletizing significantly improves loading and unloading efficiency. Warehouses, docks, and ports primarily utilize forklifts and pallet jacks. Palletized goods can be handled mechanically, saving time spent on manual handling and reducing waiting times during warehousing, loading/unloading, and transshipment. This is especially beneficial during tight cut-off times, effectively preventing delays caused by slow operations.

Palletizing also reduces cargo loss and misdelivery. Small, scattered items are easily scattered and mixed up during transit. Securing them on pallets creates a unified whole, ensuring clear item counts and preventing confusion. This makes warehouse sorting, dock loading/unloading, and destination port pickup more accurate, reducing the probability of lost, missing, or incorrect items. Palletizing is essential for high-value goods, fragile items, and precision instruments, minimizing damage caused by manual handling.

Stretch film, building upon palletizing, uses stretch film to tightly wrap the goods to the pallet. Its core function is moisture and water protection. Long sea voyages and high humidity inside containers can easily lead to condensation. Stretch film forms a sealed protective layer, preventing moisture intrusion, protecting the cartons from softening, and keeping the goods dry.

Stretching also enhances cargo stability, binding cartons, goods, and pallets together to prevent slippage, tipping, or collapse during transport. Containers sway during sea voyages; unwrapped cargo is prone to shifting and collapsing, leading to crushing damage. Stretching provides overall stability and effectively withstands turbulence and movement.

Furthermore, stretching prevents dust and dirt accumulation, keeping goods clean and improving the consignee’s inspection experience at the destination port. For LCL (Less than Container Load) shipments, stretching prevents friction and contamination with other goods, reducing disputes over damage.

In warehouse operations, palletized and stretched cargo is easier to stack, improving container space utilization and reducing wasted volume. In some scenarios, it can also prevent additional freight costs due to irregular cargo shapes. Standardized palletized cargo also better complies with domestic and international warehouse and port operating standards, reducing the probability of rejection or rework.

In short, palletizing for sea freight provides stability, protection against pressure, and ease of handling; stretching provides waterproofing, reinforcement, and protection against dirt. Using both together requires minimal investment but maximizes cargo safety, reduces transportation risks, and makes the entire sea freight process smoother and more worry-free.
