What are the core differences in timeliness and cost between international air freight and international ocean freight?

The core difference in timeliness between international air freight and international ocean freight is essentially determined by the speed of the transport vehicle and the route pattern.

Air freight uses aircraft as its carrier. Mainstream passenger aircraft with cargo holds or freighters can reach cruising speeds of 800-900 km/h. Most routes are direct, point-to-point (or transit through one or two hub airports), unconstrained by ocean routes or port calls. The total time from origin to destination is typically 3-7 days (for example, air freight from Shanghai, China to Los Angeles, USA, requires only 1-2 days for a direct flight, and with customs clearance and ground delivery at both ends, the total time is no more than 5 days).

In contrast, ocean freight uses ships as its carrier. The average speed of a container ship is only 20-25 knots (approximately 37-46 km/h). Hours), and must travel along fixed ocean routes, with multiple port stops along the way (for example, shipping from Shenzhen, China to New York, USA, requires stops at hub ports such as Singapore, the Suez Canal, and Rotterdam). The overall delivery time is generally 20-45 days (about 20-30 days for trans-Pacific routes and 15-25 days for trans-Atlantic routes. Including port loading and unloading, customs clearance, and inland transportation, the total often exceeds 30 days). During peak season, if ports are congested, delivery times can be extended by 1-2 weeks.

The core of this delivery time disparity lies in the fact that air freight can almost “straighten” geographical barriers, while sea freight, limited by ocean access and port turnover efficiency, is far less fast and flexible than air freight.

The core cost difference between the two stems from the transport capacity, unit cost allocation, and operating model of the transport carriers.

Sea freight container ships have enormous capacity (one ultra-large container ship can carry 20,000+ standard containers), resulting in extremely low per-unit cargo capacity allocation costs. Furthermore, when operating costs (such as fuel and crew salaries) are amortized across the vast volume of cargo, the cost of transporting a single container is far lower than air freight. For example, for basic transport from China to Europe, the ocean freight cost for a 20-foot standard container (20GP) is approximately $1,000-2,000. For the same volume of cargo shipped by air, the freight cost, calculated based on volume and weight, can be as high as $8,000-15,000—a cost difference of 5-10 times or even greater.

In contrast, air freight has limited available cargo space in aircraft holds (a full-cargo aircraft has a maximum cargo capacity of approximately 100-150 tons, while a passenger aircraft’s belly holds only 20-30 tons). Operating costs per unit of space (such as aviation fuel, airport landing fees, and crew costs) are extremely high. These costs must be spread over each piece of cargo, resulting in air freight unit prices (typically charged per kilogram) being much higher than sea freight (charged per cubic meter or per container).

Furthermore, while additional costs for sea freight (such as port fees and tariffs) are relatively fixed and transparent, air freight may incur additional fees (such as emergency booking fees, transit storage fees, and special cargo handling fees), further widening the cost gap between the two.

Simply put, the difference in delivery time is like the difference between “days” and “months.” Air freight’s core advantage is speed, while ocean freight’s notable characteristic is its slowness. The difference in cost is the difference between “high unit price, low volume” and “low unit price, high volume.” Air freight is suitable for small-volume, urgent shipments, while ocean freight is suitable for large-volume, non-urgent shipments. The difference between the two is essentially a choice between “speed premium” and “scale cost.”
