Not all wooden packaging requires fumigation during international air transport. Only packaging made of raw wood typically requires fumigation, while wooden packaging made of man-made boards such as plywood, particleboard, and fiberboard generally does not.
According to the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), wooden packaging requiring fumigation must be treated to eliminate pests and labeled. Common fumigation standards are as follows:
Methyl bromide fumigation (MB): The fumigation temperature must be no less than 10°C, and the fumigation time must be no less than 16 hours. During the fumigation process, different temperatures have corresponding dosage and minimum concentration requirements. For example, at temperatures of 21°C or above, the dosage is 48g/m³. The minimum concentrations for 0.5 hours, 2 hours, 4 hours, and 16 hours are 36g/m³, 24g/m³, 17g/m³, and 14g/m³, respectively.
Sulfuryl fluoride fumigation (SF): The fumigation temperature must be no less than 20°C, and the fumigation time may be 48 hours or 24 hours. Wood packaging with a minimum cross-section exceeding 20 cm or a moisture content greater than 75% must not be fumigated with sulfuryl fluoride.
In addition, heat treatment (HT) is also a common pest control method, requiring the wood core temperature to reach at least 56°C for at least 30 minutes. Kiln drying, chemical pressure penetration treatment, and other treatments can be considered heat treatments as long as they meet the required treatment specifications.
