Air Belgium changes hands to CMA CGM, ushering in a new chapter in air cargo.

Amid the evolving global logistics landscape, Air Belgium officially entered a new phase of development following its acquisition by CMA CGM. This strategically significant acquisition, finalized in April 2025, outlines a new blueprint for Air Belgium’s future development and lays a key foundation for CMA CGM’s global air cargo presence.

As a global leader in shipping and logistics, CMA CGM has consistently diversified its transport business. The acquisition of Air Belgium significantly strengthens its air cargo division. Following the acquisition, CMA CGM added four freighter aircraft, bringing its fleet to nine. This not only significantly increases CMA CGM’s air cargo capacity but also strengthens its foundation for further expansion of its global air cargo network. The deep integration of Air Belgium’s extensive operational experience and mature route resources with the CMA CGM Group’s robust global logistics system is expected to create more competitive and flexible logistics solutions to meet the complex and volatile challenges of the global supply chain.

After its integration into the CMA CGM Group, Air Belgium’s brand will be retained and its market presence will continue. The Air Belgium team is currently busy behind the scenes planning its future development direction. They remain committed to service reliability, exceptional performance, and high-quality service, striving to achieve breakthroughs in this new phase of development. Operationally, Air Belgium will optimize and upgrade route planning and flight frequency adjustments to better align with the CMA CGM Group’s overall logistics layout and maximize synergies. For example, on key trade routes connecting Europe with Asia and the Americas, Air Belgium is expected to increase flights, improve cargo transportation efficiency, and help the CMA CGM Group further consolidate its dominant position in these key markets.

Looking back at the transaction history, CMA CGM Cargo established a close partnership with Air Belgium between 2021 and 2023, entrusting the carrier with the management of four Airbus A330F aircraft at its Liège hub, providing transitional support for the CMA CGM Group’s acquisition of Air France’s operational certification. This partnership deepened mutual understanding and trust, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent full acquisition. On March 19, 2025, the Brabant-Wallonia Commercial Court approved CMA CGM’s proposed acquisition of Air Belgium’s cargo business. Subsequently, on April 30, CMA CGM officially completed the acquisition, successfully concluding the acquisition.

This acquisition has far-reaching implications for the air cargo industry. For Air Belgium, despite experiencing financial difficulties, the strong support of CMA CGM’s resources presents it with new development opportunities. CMA CGM’s advanced management philosophies, extensive market resources, and strong financial strength will help Air Belgium optimize operating costs, expand market share, and enhance service quality, potentially leading to a steady recovery and sustained growth. On the other hand, from the perspective of the industry’s competitive landscape, the acquisition of Air Belgium has further strengthened CMA CGM’s competitiveness in the air cargo sector, intensifying the competitive landscape. This will prompt competitors to re-evaluate their development strategies and increase investment in capacity expansion, service optimization, and technological innovation, driving the entire air cargo industry towards greater efficiency and superior service.

In terms of employee placement, CMA CGM has demonstrated a high sense of responsibility and compassion. This acquisition, strictly adhering to the principle of talent retention, has retained the positions of 72 experienced pilots and 52 ground operations and support staff from Air Belgium. These experienced professionals will be a key support for Air Belgium’s continued steady growth under the CMA CGM Group, ensuring operational stability and professionalism.

Looking ahead, as CMA CGM integrates and optimizes its air cargo resources, Air Belgium is expected to shine in the global air cargo market. Regarding route expansion, in addition to consolidating existing competitive routes, new routes connecting emerging markets may also be opened, providing customers with a wider range of transportation options. In terms of service innovation, leveraging CMA CGM’s expertise in digital logistics, Air Belgium may introduce advanced cargo tracking systems, intelligent warehouse management, and other services to enhance the customer experience. Furthermore, CMA CGM plans to introduce eight Airbus A350F freighters starting in 2027. These new aircraft offer advantages such as high fuel efficiency, large cargo capacity, and long range. Air Belgium is expected to benefit from the Group’s fleet upgrades, further improving operational efficiency and market competitiveness, and continuing its success in the global air cargo market.
