International air freight and international ocean freight differ in many ways.
In this article, Weefreight will provide a detailed analysis, hoping it will be helpful.
Shipping Time: International air freight is fast, typically reaching the destination within a few days. For example, a direct flight from China to the US may only take 10-15 hours, and including customs clearance and other procedures, shipping is generally completed in 3-7 days. International ocean freight is slower. From China to the US, a fast ship takes around 20-30 days, while a slow ship can take 30-60 days or even longer.
Shipping Cost: International air freight charges are relatively high. Freight is usually calculated based on the weight or volumetric weight of the cargo (length × width × height divided by 6000 cm), with a price per kilogram. For example, air freight from China to Europe may cost around 30-80 yuan per kilogram. International ocean freight charges are relatively low, primarily based on the volume or weight of the cargo, calculated per cubic meter or per ton. For ocean freight from China to Europe, the per cubic meter rate can range from 300 to 1,000 yuan.
Capacity: International air freight has limited cargo capacity. A Boeing 747-8 freighter has a maximum cargo capacity of approximately 110 tons. International ocean freight has a strong capacity. A large container ship can carry over 20,000 TEUs, weighing hundreds of thousands of tons.
Suitable cargo: International air freight is suitable for transporting high-value, time-sensitive, small or lightweight cargo, such as electronics, precision instruments, fresh food, urgent documents, and high-end clothing. International ocean freight is suitable for transporting large, heavy, and time-sensitive cargo, such as construction materials, furniture, machinery and equipment, agricultural products, and daily necessities.
Transportation Risks: International air freight is significantly affected by factors such as weather and mechanical failure. Flights may be delayed or canceled during inclement weather like heavy rain or fog. However, cargo safety is relatively high during transportation, with a lower risk of loss or damage. International sea freight is more susceptible to the effects of the natural environment, such as typhoons and tsunamis, which can lead to ship delays, cargo damage, or even shipwrecks. Furthermore, sea freight cargo may be subject to theft and damage during loading, unloading, and storage at ports.
Customs Clearance: The customs clearance process for international air freight is relatively quick, as air cargo is typically prioritized and airport customs clearance facilities and procedures are more efficient. Generally, customs clearance can be completed within 1-3 days after arrival at the airport. However, customs clearance for international sea freight takes a longer time. Due to the large volume and variety of sea freight cargo, customs inspections are demanding, and customs clearance may take 3-7 days or even longer.
When choosing between international air and sea freight, consider factors such as the urgency of the shipment, weight and volume, cost budget, and cargo characteristics. If your shipment is urgent, lightweight, small, and high-value, you can choose international air freight. If your shipment is not urgent, heavy, large, or cost-sensitive, you can choose international sea freight.
