Amazon FBA First-Mile Logistics Comparison (Ocean Freight, Air Freight, and Express Delivery: How Amazon Sellers Choose)

Among Amazon FBA first-mile logistics, ocean freight, air freight, and express delivery each have their own unique advantages, and sellers can choose based on their needs.

In this article, Weefreight will provide a detailed analysis, hoping it will be helpful.

Time Flow

Ocean Freight: Shipping from China to Amazon warehouses in the US is relatively slow. For example, shipping from China to the US Amazon warehouse typically takes 20 to 35 days or more, and can extend up to 40 days during peak season due to port congestion. The Matsun Express to the US West Coast takes approximately 12-15 days, while the Yantian Express to the US East Coast takes approximately 25-30 days. Overall, the overall shipping time is approximately 20-45 days.

Air freight: Faster delivery, with goods typically arriving at Amazon warehouses within 5-10 days. From China to the western United States, it takes approximately 3-5 days, and to Europe, approximately 4-6 days. Including customs clearance and warehouse delivery, the overall delivery time is approximately 7-10 business days.

Express delivery: Fastest delivery. International couriers like DHL and FedEx can reduce delivery times to 3-5 business days, making them suitable for urgent replenishment or time-sensitive situations.

Cost

Ocean freight: The lowest cost. Some freight rates are based on cubic meters, for example, 1 CBM ≈ 300 kg, and the per-kilogram cost is only 1/10 of air freight. For large-volume, low-value goods, ocean freight can effectively reduce unit costs.

Air freight: Higher costs, with freight rates ranging from approximately $4.50 to $7.50 per kg (including fuel surcharges). Fuel surcharges account for 30-40%, and the per-kilogram cost is 3-8 times that of ocean freight.

Express delivery: Costs are the highest, 1.5-3 times higher than air freight. For example, for shipments to the US, the cost is approximately $8-$12/kg. It is suitable for high-value, lightweight, small-volume shipments.

Cargo Attributes

Ocean freight: Suitable for large-volume general cargo, such as furniture and gardening tools (volumetric weight > actual weight), as well as low-value daily necessities, such as paper towels and storage boxes with a unit price of less than $10, and essential items for planned stockpiling, such as pet food.

Air freight: Suitable for high-value goods, such as jewelry (unit price > $200) and precision instruments; seasonal products, such as Christmas decorations and holiday limited edition items; lightweight goods, such as 3C accessories weighing less than 0.5kg; and compliance-sensitive goods, including FDA-certified medical devices.

Express delivery: Suitable for high-value, small-volume, lightweight goods, such as precision electronic components and high-end cosmetics samples, as well as small-volume shipments for urgent replenishment.

Inventory Management

Sea freight: Suitable for sellers with strong inventory management capabilities and ample funds. This allows them to stock up in advance, reducing overall logistics costs, but carries the risk of longer logistics cycles and potential inventory overstocking.

Air freight: Suitable for sellers with limited inventory management or cash flow. It allows for faster capital turnover and reduces the risk of inventory overstocking, but at a higher unit logistics cost.

Express delivery: Requires extremely high inventory management requirements and is often used for emergency stock replenishment to avoid lost sales opportunities due to stockouts. However, it is costly and unsuitable for large-scale inventory management.
