Air freight to Japan has numerous requirements and conditions regarding packaging, documentation, and item classification.
Below, Weefreight will provide detailed explanations, hoping they will be helpful.
Packaging Requirements: Packages must be securely packed. Especially for sensitive items, appropriate protective measures should be taken, such as using bubble wrap or sponge for padding and wrapping to prevent damage during transport.
Document Requirements: Importers must complete an import declaration (generally completed after the goods enter the bonded area or other designated area; special items must be declared on board or before entering the bonded area) and submit triplicate import (duty payment) declarations, along with the invoice, airway bill, certificate of origin (if WTO or preferential tariffs apply), packing list, freight bill, insurance certificate (if necessary), and any other licenses and certificates required by laws and regulations (if the import of goods is subject to relevant laws and regulations).
Item Category Requirements:
Prohibited Items: These include dangerous goods (such as explosive, flammable, corrosive, toxic, and radioactive items), contraband (such as ammunition and police equipment), public health risk items (such as corpses and unprocessed animal parts), perishable goods (such as fresh fish, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables), reactionary or illegal publications (such as reactionary newspapers, books, propaganda, and pornographic materials), live animals, and currency.
Sensitive Goods: Electrical products require a UN38.3 test report, MSDS, and a UN label on the outer box. Cosmetics/liquid bottles ≤300ml must be sealed and leak-proof, and an ingredient list must be provided (Japanese labels are preferred). Food/pharmaceuticals are permitted, but must be registered with the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan and provide a quarantine certificate (plants require a “Plant Quarantine Certificate”). Branded/imitation brand goods require a brand authorization letter or legal purchase receipt to avoid copyright infringement risks.
Other requirements: The recipient and sender’s information must be clearly and accurately filled in in English, including name, phone number, address, and postal code. Exporters must provide accurate invoices detailing the name, quantity, and value of all goods. Avoid excessive understating to avoid customs concerns, resulting in delays or fines.
