What are the Amazon FBA labeling requirements? What are the consequences of incorrect or missing labeling?

Amazon FBA labeling has a series of strict requirements.

In this article, Weefreight will explain them in detail and hope they are helpful.

Label Types and Contents:

Product Label: Each individually sold item must be affixed with an Amazon-generated FNSKU label containing the barcode, product name, and quantity information. The label typically measures 2″x1″ (50.8mmx25.4mm). For smaller items, a smaller label size of at least 1″x0.5″ may be used.

Outer Carton Label: Each shipping carton must be affixed with an Amazon-provided shipping label containing the destination warehouse code, customer number, and case number. The label measures 4″x6″ (101.6mmx152.4mm).

Special Labeling: If a box weighs over 15 kg (30 lbs), a “Team Lift” label must be affixed to both sides of the box; if it weighs over 23 kg (50 lbs), a “Mechanical Lift” label must be affixed. Oversized boxes require additional dimension information.

Label Production and Printing:

Printer Selection: We recommend using a laser printer with a resolution of 300 dpi or higher; avoid inkjet printers. Thermal printers are only suitable for temporary labels or small shipments.

Label Material: Product labels must be made of durable paper or polyester film. Outer box labels must be made of waterproof, wear-resistant paper. Amazon-approved label stock is recommended.

Print Test: Before each print, perform a test to ensure the barcode is clear and scannable. When using a barcode scanner, the scan success rate must be 100%. Blurred or distorted labels must be reprinted.

Label Application:

Product Label Application: Ensure the product surface is flat and free of bubbles or wrinkles. Apply labels to the front or side of the product first to avoid covering product information or affecting its usability. If a single package contains multiple identical products, each item requires a separate label.

Outer Carton Label Application: Before applying, clean the box surface to ensure it is free of dust and oil stains. The label should be centered on the largest surface of the box, leaving at least 2cm of clear space around the edges. You can cover the label with clear tape to prevent water damage or scratches. If both a shipping label and an overweight/oversize label are applied to the outer carton, ensure that there is at least 5cm between the labels to prevent misreading by scanners.

Incorrect or missed application of Amazon FBA labels may result in the following consequences:

Inbound Issues: Amazon warehouse staff may mark the shipment as a “problem shipment,” requiring additional inspection and processing. This can delay the shipment, impacting sales and inventory management. In severe cases, Amazon may refuse to accept the shipment, resulting in shipping delays and additional costs.

Shipping Errors: If labeling errors are severe, Amazon cannot determine the correct identity and destination of the goods. Goods may be mistakenly shipped elsewhere, impacting sales and potentially causing loss or damage.

Inventory Inaccuracies: Mislabeling errors or omissions can cause errors in Amazon’s inventory management system, preventing the system from correctly identifying the product’s identity and quantity. This can lead to inaccurate inventory data, impacting sales and replenishment decisions, potentially causing sales disruptions or overselling, and resulting in losses for sellers.

Additional Fees: If labeling issues are discovered during transit or after goods are received, sellers may be required to pay a fee to allow Amazon to relabel and restock the goods. If a return is chosen, the seller is responsible for return shipping and any other fees that may be incurred.

Impaired Store Performance: If repeated mislabeling of boxes continues to impact FBA warehousing, the platform may penalize the seller, ranging from a warning and negatively impacting store performance to a direct restriction of FBA shipping privileges.
