What’s the difference between international air freight and international express delivery?

  1. Service Nature: “Single Transport” vs. “Door-to-Door All-Inclusive”

International air freight is essentially a single cargo transportation service, solely responsible for transporting goods from the departure airport to the destination airport, similar to an “air shuttle” from airport to airport, without including ground support services at either end.

International express delivery, on the other hand, is an integrated door-to-door logistics solution. From door-to-door pickup, packaging, customs declaration, air freight, customs clearance at the destination, and door-to-door delivery, the entire process is handled by the courier, more like a “dedicated butler service.”

  1. Service Targets and Cargo Types: “Bulk Cargo” vs. “Small Parcels”

International air freight primarily serves enterprise-level bulk cargo, such as raw materials for factories and bulk shipments of goods for traders. These shipments typically weigh over tens of kilograms, or even several tons, and are highly sensitive to transportation costs. These shipments are often non-urgent.

International express delivery focuses more on personal or small business shipments, such as cross-border e-commerce retail packages, personal mailed documents/gifts, and urgent corporate samples. These shipments typically weigh less than a few dozen kilograms and are particularly suited to small items under 10 kilograms, which place higher demands on timeliness and convenience.

  1. Time Differences: “Variation by Day” vs. “Precise and Controllable”

Timelines for both are affected by factors such as route and destination, but international express delivery is more stable and faster.

International air freight: Timelines are typically 3-7 days, significantly impacted by flight schedules and ground handling efficiency. For example, after arriving at the airport, shipments may need to wait for a suitable flight, and pickup at the destination airport may be delayed, resulting in a wide range of fluctuations.

International express delivery: Leveraging its own global logistics network (e.g., FedEx and DHL’s dedicated flights and customs clearance channels), delivery is more precise, with most popular routes (such as China-US and China-Europe) achieving 2-5 day delivery. Urgent shipments can even be delivered “next day” or “next day,” and timelines are trackable and highly controllable throughout the entire process.

  1. Cost Structure and Cost-Effectiveness: “Weight/Volume-Based” vs. “Comprehensive Service Fee”

The cost structure of the two options differs significantly, and cost-effectiveness should be determined based on the weight of the shipment and demand.

International Air Freight: The cost consists of “air freight + surcharges.” Air freight is typically charged by “weight ton (W)” or “volume ton (M),” whichever is greater (1 cubic meter ≈ 167 kg). Surcharges include fuel costs, airport handling fees, etc. The higher the weight, the lower the unit cost. This option is suitable for shipments weighing more than several dozen kilograms. For example, if a 100 kg shipment is shipped by air, the per-kilogram cost may be 30%-50% lower than with express delivery.

International Express: The fee is a “comprehensive service fee,” calculated directly based on the actual weight or volumetric weight of the shipment (same as air freight rates). This includes all costs related to pickup, customs declaration, customs clearance, and delivery, with no additional surcharges. However, the unit price is higher, making it suitable for small or urgent shipments. For example, a 5kg document shipped to the US might arrive in 3 days by express delivery. While air freight is cheaper, it requires you to pick up the goods at the airport yourself, which can be quite troublesome.

  1. Customs Clearance and Responsibility: “Self-Responsibility” vs. “Full-Service”

Customs clearance is a core component of international logistics, and the two differ significantly.

International Air Freight: Customs clearance must be handled by the consignee or consignor. Air carriers only provide shipping documents and are not involved in the customs clearance process. If the consignee is unfamiliar with customs clearance regulations or lacks the necessary documentation, the goods may be delayed at the airport, resulting in high storage fees or even being returned.

International Express: Customs clearance is handled entirely by the courier. Leveraging a professional customs clearance team and long-term partnerships, customs clearance is more efficient and has a higher success rate. Express delivery companies typically remind shippers to prepare documents in advance and proactively communicate and resolve any issues, requiring little additional effort on the part of the recipient.

  1. Tracking and After-Sales Service: “Fuzzy Nodes” vs. “Fully Transparent Process”

International air freight: Tracking information is relatively simple, typically only showing key milestones like “shipment departed” and “shipment arrived at the destination airport.” Real-time tracking of transit and customs clearance progress is difficult. After-sales service often addresses shipping damage or loss, requiring negotiation with the air carrier, a cumbersome process.

International express delivery: The tracking system is mature, with real-time updates on every step from pickup to delivery (e.g., packaging, customs declaration, transit, customs clearance, and delivery). After-sales service is also more responsive, and if issues such as delayed or damaged shipments arise, you can directly contact the courier’s customer service for a more efficient solution.
