How are international express delivery charges calculated? Which factors influence the price more? Weight or volume?

International express delivery charges are usually composed of multiple factors.

In this article, Weefreight will provide a detailed analysis, hoping it will be helpful.

Weight and Volume: International express delivery charges are based on “billed weight,” where billed weight = max(actual weight + volumetric weight). Actual weight refers to the weighed weight of the goods including packaging. Volumetric weight, for lightweight and bulky goods, is calculated as follows: Volumetric weight (kg) = length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) ÷ 5000. For example, a package measuring 40cm in length, 30cm in width, and 20cm in height has an actual weight of 3kg. Its volumetric weight = 40 × 30 × 20 ÷ 5000 = 4.8kg, resulting in a charge of 4.8kg.

Shipping Distance: Base shipping charges vary depending on the distance to the destination. For example, Yiqi International Express categorizes global destinations into near-neighborhood, medium-long-haul, long-haul, and remote areas. For a 1kg standard express delivery, the shipping fee for near-neighborhood (Japan, South Korea, and some Southeast Asian countries) is 120-180 RMB, for medium-long-haul (Europe, America, and Australia) it’s 180-250 RMB, for long-haul (Africa and some South American countries) it’s 250-320 RMB, and for remote areas (such as Alaska) it’s 320-400 RMB.

Packaging Requirements: Basic packaging is free for general cargo. Fragile items require customized double-layer protective packaging for a fee of 20-50 RMB per shipment. Dangerous goods require anti-static packaging for a fee of 30-60 RMB per shipment.

Insurance: Optional, charged at 1% of the declared value of the goods, with no upper limit. For example, for a mobile phone with a declared value of 5,000 RMB, the insurance fee = 5,000 × 1% = 50 RMB.

The impact of weight and volume on price depends on the value of each. When the actual weight of a shipment exceeds its volumetric weight, the actual weight has a greater impact on the price; when the volumetric weight exceeds the actual weight, the volumetric weight has a greater impact on the price. Generally speaking, volumetric weight can significantly increase shipping costs for lightweight but bulky shipments, and in this case, the impact of volumetric weight on price is more significant.
