Can live electrical products be shipped internationally by air? What special procedures are required?

Live electrical products can be shipped internationally by air, but certain conditions and special procedures must be met.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations, electronic products with lithium batteries rated at no more than 100Wh can generally be shipped by air. Batteries exceeding 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh may be transported with airline approval; batteries exceeding 160Wh are prohibited on passenger aircraft. Furthermore, lithium-ion batteries shipped individually should not be transported by air if their state of charge exceeds 30% of their rated capacity, unless approved by the competent authorities of the country of origin and the country of operator and in accordance with written conditions established by those authorities.

The special procedures required for shipping live electrical products are as follows:

Document Requirements:

MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This document details the product’s chemical properties, potential risks, and emergency response measures, and is an important document demonstrating product safety.

UN38.3 Test Report: All lithium batteries must pass this test before international transport to verify their ability to withstand the various environmental conditions encountered during air transport.

Dangerous Goods Declaration Form: According to IATA requirements, this declaration form is required for export to ensure accurate declaration and review of shipping information.

Shipper’s Declaration: Some airlines may require a shipper’s declaration stating that the nature, quantity, and packaging of the goods meet transportation requirements.

Packaging Requirements:

Individual Batteries: Each lithium battery must be placed in a separate, fully sealed inner packaging to prevent accidental activation due to impact or vibration. The outer packaging must be waterproof and able to withstand pressure fluctuations during air transport. Lining may be used for additional protection if necessary. The dangerous goods symbol, UN code, and relevant shipping information must be clearly marked on the packaging.

Equipment Containing Batteries: Batteries must be securely installed in the equipment to prevent them from loosening or falling out during transport. The packaging of the equipment must also protect the battery from damage such as crushing and impact.

Labeling Requirements: The packaging must display a lithium battery hazard label and a “Caution: Lithium Battery” warning to alert transport personnel.
